Pauline Wake
Clinical lecturer and Anaesthetist
I am a clinical lecturer and Anaesthetist at the University of Papua New Guinea and Port Moresby General Hospital in Papua New Guinea. I completed my MBBS in 2006 and postgraduate MMED in Anaesthesiology in 2013 from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Papua Guinea. I also am currently doing my fellowship in pediatric anaesthesia in Vellore, India.
My first exposure to PTC was as a participant in 2008 in Alotau Provincial Hospital, Milne Bay Province, PNG. In 2009, while working as an Emergency Medicine registrar, I was given the opportunity to be attached to PTC workshop and assist in facilitated under the leadership and mentoring of Dr Lucas Samof. Within that same year, I assisted in all organized PTC courses.
The following years in 2010 to 2012, I coordinated and facilitated PTC workshops with support of the anaesthetic department team of Alotau Provincial Hospital. More than 200 participants were trained. Of these 200+, < 5% of them were non health workers: firemen, airport employees. Thus part of the challenge was teaching PTC to non health workers appropriately to what was applicable for them.
